Letter From Pastor
Dear Friends,
Welcome to Old Whalers’ Church; a national historic landmark, a gathering place for the community, a beacon of Sag Harbor. Listen to the ancient voices that echo in these hallowed halls, the generations of people who have stood here before me. People that have helped to build this village and create its history- the whalers, ship-builders-coopers, barrel makes, dreamers, mothers and fathers and children who grew with this church as a central force in their lives.
Old Whalers’ lives by the motto, ‘An Open Door Since 1844’ and welcomes fellow searchers and all who would like to visit or join our community. Inspired by faith and fellowship our services include inspiration and peace. It is my hope and intention to provide a place for people to gather, to grow in community and in the vision of God in their lives.
Our Sunday School program and ‘Soulful Songs and Stories’ offer our youth a place to go to ask the big questions, to grow in faith and friendship, to sing and dance and enjoy the wondrous gift of life. Learning songs and sharing them with the congregation has been a joyful part of our time together. Exploration, creativity ,friendship and faith are the cornerstones of our programs.
Music has been a constant source of joy at Old Whalers’. Our music director, the highly regarded Walter Klauss, continues to keep our historic 1845 pipe organ carrying music to the heavens. Soloists and inspired music keep all who attend uplifted, as if we were attending a concert each week. Our bell choir presents monthly with wonderful arrangements of hymns and inspired songs.
Times have been challenging, churches work to keep their doors open, and people are recovering from extensive time apart-now we try to once again meet as a community, support our youth and explore our faith. We welcome you, we invite you, we pray you will join us.
May the light in you, the God in you, the hope in you-reach out and join us. Our weekly coffee hour invites everyone to friendship, conversation and one of the best cups of coffee in town. I sincerely hope to see you there! Come, let’s grow OLD together!
In Peace and Fellowship,
Rev. Nancy Remkus
