We are privileged to welcome two outstanding musicians to worship service this week: Violinists Jessica Tortorice and Rebecca Anderson.
Jessica Tortorice is in great demand as violinist, both as an orchestral player and chamber musician. She studied at the Juilliard School Pre-college and received her undergraduate degree in performance from the Royal College of Music in London. This past spring, she obtained her masters in performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College.
Jessica has been on the sub lists for Virginia Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic and English National Opera. For the 2013-14 season she was assistant principal second violin with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra and assistant concertmaster with Skagit Opera. Most recently she performed with the New York Philharmonic in their summer series. Jessica is also the artistic co-director of the very successful Southampton String Festival, which offers dedicated string teaching to young students during the last two weeks of July, set in the beautiful Hamptons. Jessica plays on a beautiful 19th century Vuillaume violin.
Violinist Rebecca Anderson is a versatile soloist and chamber musician based in New York City. Recent concert engagements range from solo performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra and contemporary music premieres with members of eighth blackbird to collaborations with Questlove and Ben Folds. Anderson’’s passion for chamber music has led to festival appearances with Chamber Music Northwest, the Savannah Music Festival, Music from Angel Fire, The Perlman Music Program, and the Keshet Eilon Violin Mastercourse in Israel and collaborations with Ani and Ida Kavafian, Itzhak Perlman, Andréé Watts, and David Shifrin. Anderson won First Prize at the 2013 American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition. Other awards include the 2008 National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts YoungArts Gold Award, which led to being named a Presidential Scholar in both arts and academics, and the bronze medal and Bach Award at the 2008 Stulberg International String Competition. Anderson is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Ida Kavafian and Pamela Frank. She is currently pursuing her master’’s degree with Ronald Copes and Donald Weilerstein at the Juilliard School.
Please plan to be in worship this week and welcome these two gifted musicians to Old Whalers' Church.

Choir & Bell Choir Rehearsals Resume
Have you ever given any thought to singing in the choir or ringing in our bell choir? Now would be the perfect time to give one or both groups a try! Both choirs will begin working on special holiday music as well as preparing selections for upcoming worship services. Those interested in singing in the choir are asked to speak to Director of Music, Dominick Abbate and those interested in ringing in the bell choir should see Bell Choir Director David Cummings. We have a core group of dedicated singers and ringers (and two really great directors), but we can also additional participants. Still not sure? Why not come to a rehearsal and give us a try. The choir rehearses at 5:00 on Wednesday afternoon and the bell choir at 6:00. Will we see YOU this week?
|Nursery - Posted On: Thursday, August 28, 2014|
NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
At one time, Old Whalers’ provided nursery care on Sunday mornings during the worship service. For many years, the nursery was staffed by volunteers and then by paid employees. This provided an opportunity for parents of infants and very young children to worship while their children were well cared for. Three years ago, due to financial challenges, the Session had to eliminate the paid nursery worker position. We made several attempts to staff the nursery with adult volunteers but had very limited success. In an effort to be a welcoming church for all ages, the Session wishes to explore the possibility of providing nursery care again on Sunday mornings. If any of our members would like to volunteer for a week or two each month, please speak to Rev. Mark Phillips. Two people are needed - one of whom is a responsible adult.

KEEPING IN TOUCH
In an effort to better care for our members and friends, please notify the church office if you (or a family member) are hospitalized. The hospitals no longer contact the churches and the only way we can be of help to you is if we are notified.

The flower calendar is located on the bulletin board in the social hall. Simply place your name on the calendar on the desired date. Then, complete the order form (located next to the calendar) and return it to the church office with payment.
